In the Balance - 60 Minutes this past Monday
I found it sad in a way that I find my own present situation so difficult and so much challenge, yet mine pail in comparison to those featured in this article. I felt I could relate to them because the reasons they are the way they are, are the same as the reasons I am the way I am, or should I say, the reason why I look the way I look.
The old addiage of not judging a book by its cover is for real an attitude a person has to have the ability to look beyond what the outer appearance shows to what the abilities are underneath.
To be honest, if it wasn't so life threatening, and prohibitive to the life I want to live I would stay this way because its not who I am. While I do not like shell-fish per say, but what is really desired from that is what is inside. Proof to the saying, its what is inside that matters.
I get the looks, I get the glances, I get the whisperings. People must think that fat people are as thick as they appear that we do not notice people looking, then turning around to their friends, and think they are cunningly saying quietly, 'hey, take a look at that wide load coming,' then their friends turn around. I get it at Pak n Save, car parks, movie cinemas, anywhere I go, I get the looks. Kids, bless their hearts, 'hey mummy, he's really fat.'
I may not need a pilot vehicle to say 'Wide Load' coming, while reaching for a bottle of milk, but people out there just need to spend some time in our shoes to see what its like being like this. What coffee, tea, smokes are to some people, food is to someone like me. When a smoker gets strung out they go and have a smoke. When I get stressed, its a Mountain Dew and a pie or a burger king burger. Its really just the other side of the same coin.
