Legislating the little things...wasted time!
While not trying to seem overly political and critical, WAKE UP LABOUR!!! My goodness Ms Chadwick, MP for Rotorua. What the hell are you trying to prove? That New Zealanders are as babyish as you or your MP mates? Do we need another invasive peice of legislation that proves we need to know that peeing into the wind is possibly bad for your hygene?
I personally am not opposed to any woman breastfeeding in public. As long as they aren't really going, 'hey look at me, here I am in my glory' then I don't really care. Its natural, its supposed to happen and it needs too. And because a private estabishment may say, please do not do it here, whats the deal.
Can I ask Ms Chadwick this. Lets say, someone walks into my home, a guest, and they want to breastfeed their child, would it be illegal for me to say no? Because it would be a violation of that persons human rights. But what about my human rights.
Personally, I think its more offensive for me to see a hairy man, in short shorts and a black singlet and jandels walking into pack and save than it is for me to see a woman breastfeeding her child. A sight like that is enough to kill a man, or at least drive him balmy. I think that it is quite offensive. Is that kind of human rights violation going to be legislated against next? If this breastfeeding thing goes through, then heck, there should be a law against hairy guys wearing next to nothing public. No offence intended, girls too. Or what about overly chubby people wearing lycra...Helen Clark in a two peice...What is one persons human rights violation is another persons human right. So where does it end?
I was in a restaurant where a nurturing mother was offered a feeding blanket of sorts that meant that she was able to tend to her little one, while still being 'modest' or covered while she breast feed. While everyone knew what she was doing, no one else needed to see and she wasnt lead to feel awkward and it was a service that they were happy to render. On the other side, I saw one that had a label on the door and a small sign at the counter which said, "with respect, please no breast feeding." A nice way to ask, and no one seemed offended. So why not invite all the places that have complained about or have been complained about to participate in some kind of friendly programme?
WHY Legislate? I'm sure we have our own point of view about this and I welcome sensible comment. But personally, its not as easy as one thinks it might be.

I recall "politics" being defined by a renowned politicial analyst of Hitler and Stalin's time as "the process used to control the minds of the masses so they will do what you want them to".
Anyone that's seen Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" will know that it's certainly possible for a nation to be it's own and greatest enemy. New Zealanders need to be interupted as "All is well in Zion" is sounding loud and clear in our ears! Given our geographic isolation, independent house of representatives, low level of political or trading influence - how much more trouble could we be in? We are at the complete and utter mercy of ourselves...and er hello, "the Emperor has no clothes". The New Zealand public are being well and truly acted upon and nobody out in the world gives a stuff!
Our problem is not fear that leads to gun-toting hysteria, it's apathy which allows us to be led by the nose! We're a nation of individuals that insist that all boat rockers sit down in case we all fall out of the boat and get wet and uncomfortable. We dislike the party poopers, the big mouths, the activists and the trouble makers. We pride ourselves in being a 'peaceful' nation but really we're just asleep.
Baby Nia Glassie, Cru & Chris Kahui and a list of other precious souls as long as my driveway are dead...and the most we're willing to do about this is: "With more investment in programmes and systems and the goodwill and actions of ordinary New Zealanders, I believe we can combat child abuse and improve the lives of our children" Cindy Kiro PhD, Commissioner for Children.
I tell you if I were looking for a hero to save me from certain death I wouldn't turn to Cindy! Who besides the Prime Minister in this country has more power to make a change for these kids besides this woman, and the best she can come up with is more programmes??!!!!!!
What about tougher sentencing? What about CYPS & the Police being empowered with the right to enter a home and question children without "just cause"? What about being free to teach children the values of family and marriage in school...and not call it hate preaching? What about pulling the welfare carpet out from those who gamble it away, or drink it away, or drugup on it? What about demanding that these mongrels get the full extent of the law thrown at them? And their family and neighbours too!! What about throwing Cindy out because she's just not effective and giving the money that pays for her salary and the 'programmes' to the kids who get beaten up to decide what should happen? We don't need more programmes, we need a double edged sword swift and sure, and a milestone hung around the necks of these cowards and to drop them into the sea. At the same time we need those with real influence to risk their public adorations and step up to say something - the All Blacks, the Silver ferns, the Maori business community, the recipients of the Victoria Cross, the educators, the whanau, the neighbours, the team coaches, the heros...whoever has thee attention of those who feel its ok to taunt and minimise the worth of children. So that the mongrels are made to realise they are abnormal, abhorred and unacceptable to our society...so that they change.
We and Brian Tamaki point the finger at the Islamic people for their beliefs and laws...but how many children are lost to child abuse each year in Islamic communities?
Wake up New Zealand, our laws are failing us and our children. What are we going to do about it? Shrink into the ocean with shame? Or vote, run for office, challenge our neighbours, fight for the kids that can't fight for themselves?Stand for something!
