The Boy Racer Problem
Lets admit that there is a problem first. Listening to some of the comments from those inside the Boy Racer fraternity on Breakfast in the mornings and other interviews, they do not or cannot admit that they are a part of the overall problem. They do not see that popping wheelies, pouring diesel on the roads, reving over powered engines, and having races on open streets is a problem. To them (or to be fair, some of them) this is something they enjoy doing. But hang on. Skateboarders said that when they were looking at being banned from City centres because they were causing injuries too.
The difference between a skateboard and a 1 ton car is no one has died because of a skateboarder yet. So the old and worn out excuse that it is something we enjoy doing, does not hold much water with me.
No... What councils are planning as far as a blanket ban is not fair. There will be losers. What about those who have already lost through this mentality? Is it fair on them? I was listening to one comment on 3 News I think it was by someone who was at the crash that another car pulled out forcing the car that killed the young boy to swerve and hit him. The question should be asked to that young boy on TV, if the race was not happening, would he still be alive?
I don't know if compulsory insurance is the answer to the problem. If its someone older who buys the car then what. The third party has to get third party insurance for a car thats not even theirs? I do not know how that can work. I don't know if there is enough teeth in the current law but the courts may be being over PC and not taking the cars away or imposing a penalty. I'm still trying to figure out though how in one instance where a guy was pulled over and convicted for driving without a lisence or it was disqualified from him and he was pulled over and convicted a 7th time, but no prison time. So really, why are not the judges enforcing the law.
Why is it that judges seem to be reluctant to impose the full measure of the law. And also, why is it that it takes so long for these cases to come before the courst in the first place. In some cases the act happens, they appear in court the next day then it seems like its ages before the suspect is back infront of a judge having the case heard.
I guess as an outsider looking in I have to wonder if some of these boy racers are similar to dangerous dog owners.
What do you as blog readers reckon?
