No....REALLY???? WOW...never thought of that...

I don't think anyone had until New Zealand Herald articles about Telecom's charges would have imagined in their wildest dreams that they were paying more than the average OECD charges. I think everyone in the world thought that they were paying a relatively good price for the quality of service they get from Telecom.

WHAT EVER.

Good grief. On average, we are getting ripped. Something chronic. And it has to be said, not only by Telecom.

The average land line usage rental is over $50. I have a mobile phone that is credited $30 a month, which can be used each month like credit for anything, calls, texts, downloads, etc. Some how, my line rentals, mobile phone, and broadband some how come to nearly $200 a month.

Personally, without being a telecommunications specialist or even analyst, for what we pay, we get suck all, except a massive bill which is pretty hard to read as far as bills go. It takes on average in the last few calls I've made to the Telecom service lines, nearly 10 minutes to speak to someone who is not a voice recognition system and can "understand what I say".

Thing is in this country, we are suffering from a severe lack of real options. Vodaphone is now starting to come in, but its rates are still pretty high and come with landmark contract times and massive back out costs. Some other options out there are only one dimensional. As in, either land line only or internet only, thus not being real value for money in the communications stakes anyways.

What else can one do. Pay the bills. Hope someone else comes along and re-shapes the industry completely.

Without knowing too much about the NZ market, I'd guess the best strategy is to go with the newer players, to increase the benefits of competition, and therefore encourage other new start-ups and outside corporations to come in.
