Random thought this week

This is either one random though, or its been created by the fact that I've been sleep deprived and been on sedatives on and off this week.

But when you think of someone saying "dangerous roads" what do you think of?

I know what I think of when someone says "dangerous driver" but are they the same thing?

Its like saying "a gun is dangerous". Is it? Personally, I think it has the potential to be dangerous, as Dick Channey found out when it is not used wisely? But is that the guns fault? Do we become this prissy overly PC country one day that totally bans the use of any type of fire arm because it is dangerous?...rather than taking them out of the hands of people who make them dangerous?

When was the last time a stretch of road jumped up and crashed into you? What did the road do to you? Whether it be a straight stretch like the continential highway on the Kapiti Coast or the twisting turning hills south of National Park, or even the Desert Road, is it the road that is dangerous, or is it the driver, not respecting the road?

Now I for one, am not a perfect road user. I often take turns above the recommended speed at times. I sometimes go over the speed limit, and I even have made a U turn at non-Uturn points. But I ask you...is it the road that is dangerous...or the person using it, making it so...by their own stupid actions.

I personally believe that a dangerous driver has the potential to do more damage than any stretch of road in this country. I have yet to see a major crash in this country, and some of news worthy note, where the road has been the sole cause of the crash.

The crash where a van crossed the centre strip and killed all the occupants...dangerous road or sleeping at the wheel? Was that the roads fault? There are other examples...especially along Meremere heading to Auckland...its not an ideal road, but can be navigated quite easily at the recommended speeds. Crashes occur because the driver is not being accountable for their actions...and the road gets the blame.

Our roading system is far from perfect, regardless what the Jaffa's think north of the Bombays, outside of that little bubble, the highways will always undergo improvements and changes. But so should the drivers. Driving attitudes in the last 10 years are a shadow of what they used to be. Green is go...Amber means...well, I dont think many of us know any more but also, Red has somewhat blurred and that goes for truckies and bus drivers. For example, I was sitting at an intersection just the other day and had a green arrow to go turn and a large red NZ Post truck coming at me, after I had the good to go signal.

Anyways, thats me for today.
