Call for a snap election?
I heard there is a petition going through the electoral office website in relation to a call for the Governor General to not sign validation legislation regarding the illegal use of money during the last election. Well thats not true in any case, but I don't think that angle is quite the right one.
The Governor General, simply being the Queen's personal representative in New Zealand is legally obligated to sign any legislation that the parliament enacts through its own voting processes. He cannot not sign it. He has no power of Veto. He can only dissolve the parliament under direct authority from the Queen. Which I do not think has ever been done in New Zealand history, and only once in Australia.
But there is a definate trend in this Governments history to make the illegal, legal when they especially are getting caught out doing the wrong thing. In this case, all but one of the political parties in parliament over spent money. The lowest being something like $50.00 and the most, nearly $900,000. Problem being, that anyone who has done it, over the past 16 years, which is about 9 or so elections, now cannot be held responsible for it. Because for then, now and in the future, what was once illegal, is now legal. Granted, they are paying back the money, but thats not the point.
While right now, I am advocating that maybe a snap election should be called, take a look at my blog from 31 August. I still havent changed on that view.
